A Prayer for November
Teach me to rebuild
Inspired by Nehemiah 6
God, Master Builder,
Teach me to build; teach me to rebuild.
And if it’s relevant, teach me the difference.
Putting my hands to the work isn’t arduous,
but keeping my eyes on the work is a relentless challenge.
As soon as I take my hand to my tools, the distractions come.
They come with faces and perceptions, intimidations and requests.
They come with invitation and urgency, and they do not let up.
Guard me from the louder tasks, from the tasks that
chip at my confidence and discourage my drive.
Help me steward my attention on the work You’ve given me;
help me defend its importance.
Protect me from the tasks that appear spiritual but trouble my spirit.
Teach me to stay.
Strengthen my hands for the finish—or better—strengthen my hands
for the million repetitons of movement that bring every good finish.
May it come swiftly—not for my comfort but for Your glory.
Amen.
